Creating Glass Mosaics During the Pandemic

Updated: Aug 27, 2021

On March 18, 2020, the world changed in such a strange and unique way with the pandemic. I started creating glass Mosaics as a way to self-soothe, to distract myself from watching the news too much, and to find a new creative outlet during a difficult time in the world. At first, my default was to try to make "perfect art," but now I do it to give myself rest and to get to be creative in an activity that is personally restorative. There's something humanizing in attempting to be creative and allowing the flaws, vulnerability, and mistakes to just be what they are. The goal for myself in this is to have fun and to not be perfect.

I remember bringing my first piece back to the shop to have it cemented and grouted. The woman working there asked at first how it turned out, then she asked if I enjoyed the process. What a great thing to ask another human being. I laughed and told her it was one of the most enjoyable activities I've done in a while. My inner-child was telling me that he needed to play, and my job was/is to listen to him. For all of us that is a learning process to pay attention to our inner worlds, accept the feeling, acknowledge the need, and take action in a complete unknown.
